Technical Director in Theatre and Dance

Phillips Academy seeks a full-time, continuing Technical Director in Theatre and Dance to begin in September of 2020.  General responsibilities include operating, maintaining, and safeguarding the technical assets of the theatre; providing oversight of set construction, sound, and rigging elements for 6-7 main stage shows per year in addition to events held by students and guest artists; supervising student stage crews; collaborating with various designers; overseeing the scene shop budget, purchases, and annual safety inspections of theatres; design work as needed and as skills allow; and some teaching.  Management responsibilities may include scheduling the use of theatre spaces in coordination with the department chair, assisting with events by outside departments using the theatre spaces, and supervising staff.

Candidates must have strong communication skills; be willing to work and collaborate with faculty and staff in a fast-paced environment; be able to operate lifts, climb stairs, and work from ladders; and be available to work nights and weekends as needed.  The ideal candidate will have interest and experience in scenic design, as well as experience in scenic construction, stage rigging, using Vectorworks or similar CAD, sound, and light design.  We seek dynamic candidates who will be active participants not only in the academic and arts programs but also in the athletics/fitness and residential programs at this boarding school.  Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of experience required.  Master’s degree and experience in an educational setting preferred.
