Groundsperson/Driver - Full Time

Phillips Academy seeks a full-time Groundsperson/Driver to join their Grounds Team.  Under the direct supervision of the Grounds Leadperson, performs all labor tasks related to grounds maintenance operations and driving. When emergencies and/or extreme weather conditions occur, the functions of this position may be deemed essential, and employees must report to work and/or remain on duty during their regularly scheduled work hours or the work hours designated by their supervisors.  Supervisors will inform employees when the functions are essential.  

The successful candidate must possess the essential qualifications and be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily:

  • Must possess valid driver’s license and be able to safely operate passenger vehicles, alternate vehicles, small tractors and other motorized equipment.
  • Must posses CDL Class B License with passenger endorsement and other associated endorsements

1-3 years’ experience in grounds maintenance or related field and 1-3 years’ experience driving large vehicles/buses. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Safely operates all grounds equipment.
  • Drives students to off campus activities in a school bus
  • Drives as needed to transport people or equipment
  • Assists with tree & shrub pruning.
  • Operates woodchipper with supervision.
  • Assists with athletic field maintenance.
  • Performs leaf raking, shoveling, weeding, mulching, planting, seeding, snow shoveling, snow blowing.
  • Assists with solid waste disposal and recycling efforts.
  • Performs general labor required for grounds maintenance activities.
  • Work schedule is on a flex-time basis and overtime may be required.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Operation of riding mowers.
May drive large trucks and equipment.
All other duties as assigned by Grounds Work Leader, Manager of Grounds & Vehicles or their designee.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to function as a team member, to function well with members of the community, ability to work long periods and in inclement weather.  Dependability with attention to punctuality and attendance is essential.

• The employee may work in extremely poor weather for extended periods of time.
• Sometimes required to work in dirty & dusty environments.
• The employee may be in the sun for extended periods of time.
• Will work outside during hot & cold weather.

Protective Equipment: 
Gloves, steel toed boots, hard hat, face shields, glasses and hearing protection may all be required depending on the job task.

Tool Use: 
Small hand tools will be required including brooms, shovels, rakes, pruners, small & mid-sized mowers, leaf & snow blowers etc. 

This full time position is benefits eligible with employer-subsidized medical, dental, mental health benefits eligible on day 1, Retirement program with 10% employer contribution, annual paid time off:  13 holidays, 3-6 weeks vacation, 10-12 sick days per year.  As well as, employer paid life insurance and long term disability insurance, free meals during work hours and discounted on-campus childcare.
